Toilet Training

What is the right time to start toilet training?

  • Your child’s body must be ready. The sphincter muscles, which control the ability to hold and let go of the fecal material, do not become fully mature until your child is 1.5- 2 years. Your child must have some words to communicate his/her need to go to the toilet. The child should be able to anticipate the necessary action.
  • He should be able to sit and rise from a potty chair. He should be able to pull down his pants and put them again. He should be able to follow simple directions. Then he is ready for potty training. This usually occurs between 1.5 – 2 years.

How should I toilet train my child?

  • Train the child when he/she is ready for it, without force and criticism.
  • Get the child used to toilet seat at least for a few weeks, first as another piece of furniture to sit on only. You can use a potty chair also.
  • Once he/she is familiar with it he/she can be told and shown how the upper lid is kept upward. If he/she wants to do it let him/her try it.
  • Later when he/she is ready to eliminate, you can guide him/her to toilet seat and suggest that he/she can try it. Don’t force him/her, if he/she is not ready.
  • If your child has a bowel movement at the same time each day, leave their nappy off and ask them to go to in the potty. If your child is reluctant, put the nappy back and try after a few days.
  • You should remember that they might fail at times in the process of gaining control. So don’t criticize your child when he/she is unsuccessful.
  • When they are successful, you can praise them by giving stickers or stars. When they are not successful also, praise them for their attempt.
